Sustainable economic development in Yap

CSF is helping Yap State in the Federated States of Micronesia design a framework for sustainable economic development. Key stakeholders will explore scenarios for future development, learn how to measure environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts of different types of programs, and evaluate the potential of proposed projects to achieve sustainable development. This effort is one of several analysis projects being conducted in Micronesia following CSF's Economic Tools for Conservation in Micronesia course held in March of 2012.

Kigogole field is a rhomboid tilted fault block structure in the Albertine Graben. Kigogole field has five successful exploration and appraisal wells namely; Kigogle 1,2,3,4 and 5. The seismic data indicates presence of normal faults and the fualt bound structures make it necessary to drill appraisal wells to evaluate the reservoir continuity. It is proposed that 3 more well sites be appraised; Kigogole 6,7 and 8.

Tullow made several oil discoveries in Uganda including; thin channel- shaped reservoirs in Kaiso-Tonya(Mputa/Waraga reservoirs), over-pressured oil in Ngassa2, and thicker amalgamated fluvial channel systems at Kasamene1 in the Butiaba area. The reservoirs have different dynamics with fluid properties such as viscosity and GOR, the oil generally has high wax content and varying oil gravity requiring different designs and for testing and assessment.

Extended well Testing is intended to enhance understanding of the sub-surface potential of the servior and facilitate drilling requirements for the tested fields.

Petroleum exploration in Uganda has a long history dating back in 1938 when the 1st well (Waki B 1) was drilled by the Anglo European Company of South Africa. At that time oil prices and technology were low and therefore the prospects were found commercially unfeasible.

In 1997, Heritage was awarded Exploration Area 3(EA3) in the Semliki area followed by commercially exploitable reserves of oil (Mputa, Waraga, Nzizi, and Kingfisher) estimated at 300 Millionto 2.5 billion barrels in 2008 and 2009. Since then, there has been exponential growth in foreign investments to approximately $350 Million as of 2010.
