In May 2016, staff from the CSF Brazil team travelled to the Salgado Paraense region, located on the northern coast of the state of Pará.  Their goal was to collect important information as part of our project on the sustainability of mangrove ecosystems. This project seeks to sensitize the government and society to the benefits these ecosystems provide, and make recommendations about economic instruments that could be used to promote financial sustainability of protected areas.

BUILD Synthesis Report

From 2011-2015, CSF engaged in a comprehensive global initiative through the Biodiversity Understanding in Infrastructure and Landscape Development (BUILD) program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This report highlights key elements of this multi-year, multi-continent set of infrastructure related projects, and includes an appendix of all activities by region.

Mangroves are a key ecosystem contributing to biodiversity and flood protection on a local and regional level. Unfortunately most people are unaware of the ecosystem services provided by mangroves. As a result, overfishing and pollution threaten this critical habitat.

Economic instruments for ecosystem services conservation in mangroves located in federal protected areas

In 2015, CSF started a project within the scope of GEF Mangroves Program, in collaboration with FUNBIO (Brazilian Fund for Biodiversity) regarding the management of mangroves ecosystem services.

Around 90% of mangrove ecosystems in Brazil are located in protected areas. However, there are important deficiencies in terms of financial sustainability and resource management in these areas that affect natural capital stocks and biodiversity.

Therefore, we seek to study how different economic instrument designs may influence ecosystem services provision in mangroves. In order to do that we will:

1) Identify and prioritize ecosystem services provided by mangroves;
2) Assess the main ecosystem services values provided by mangroves in Brazil;

Risks and opportunities of environmental reserve quotas: How to ensure protection of priority conservation areas?

Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF) analyzed the risks and benefits of the Environmental Reserve Quota (Portuguese acronym, CRA) markets in the state of Bahia, in the northeastern region of Brazil. The goal of this work is to support the government in the design of state law to ensure that CRA markets protect priority conservation areas.
