CSF Projects

Conservation Strategy Fund helps local conservationists use economic tools to find smart, efficient solutions to the most urgent environmental problems. Since its creation in 1998, CSF has conducted dozens of analysis projects in forests, rivers and coastal environments. Most of our work has focused in the tropics, where extraordinarily high levels of biological diversity are found. To maximize the reach and quality of our work, we involve leading experts and conservation organizations in all of our projects.

La Unidad de Apoyo de ICAA y Conservación Estratégica (CSF), en el marco de la Iniciativa para la Conservación en la Amazonía Andina – ICAA , invitan a investigadores y analistas a proponer investigaciones económicas aplicadas a temas de conservación de la biodiversidad en la Amazonía.

Como resultado de un proceso competitivo de selección de propuestas se apoyará, técnica y financieramente, el desarrollo de ocho investigaciones.

Investigaciones Económicas Aplicadas para la Conservación en la Amazonia Andina

La Unidad de Apoyo de ICAA y Conservación Estratégica (CSF), en el marco de la Iniciativa para la Conservación en la Amazonía Andina (ICAA), invitan a investigadores y analistas a proponer investigaciones económicas aplicadas a temas de conservación de la biodiversidad en la Amazonía.

En el marco del programa ICAA, se ha diseñado un fondo de becas de investigación para profesionales que trabajan en temas de análisis económico relacionados con la conservación de la biodiversidad en la Amazonia Andina de Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador y Perú.

Estimating the value of restoring coastal environments in the Marshall Islands

CSF is partnering with the Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority (MIMRA) and the Marshall Islands Conservation Society (MICS) to analyze the economic benefits of protecting or restoring coastal and marine areas in Majuro Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) from damaging activities such as overfishing, mining, and pollution. The project will also consider the role of marine and terrestrial protected areas in maintaining or enhancing these benefits.

CSF presenta un nuevo programa de fortalecimiento de capacidades, esta vez, a nivel institucional. Este programa es financiado por USAID y la Fundación Gordon y Betty Moore a través del programa BUILD (Biodiversity Understanding in Infrastructure and Landscape Development).

Cost-benefit analysis of the Cachuela Esperanza Hydroelectric Project

The Cachuela Esperanza hydroelectric mega-project is part of the South American Infrastructure Integration Initiative (IIRSSA). It refers to a 990MW hydroelectric dam that would be built on the Beni River on the outskirts of the Cachuela Esperanza village. This would provide energy to populations in Northern Bolivia and would allow the exportation of electricity to Brazil. The feasibility report, as ordered by the Bolivian government, shows that the environmental and social damages caused by this project would be massive - more than 900Km2 flooded and almost 100,000 people affected. Despite these impacts, the government considers this to be a beneficial project and has continually vowed the desire to move forward with it.

Sustainable economic development in Yap

CSF is helping Yap State in the Federated States of Micronesia design a framework for sustainable economic development. Key stakeholders will explore scenarios for future development, learn how to measure environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts of different types of programs, and evaluate the potential of proposed projects to achieve sustainable development. This effort is one of several analysis projects being conducted in Micronesia following CSF's Economic Tools for Conservation in Micronesia course held in March of 2012.

Biodiversity Understanding in Infrastructure and Landscape Development (BUILD)

Through an agreement with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF) has launched a comprehensive initiative in central Africa, expand CSF’s programs in the Andes-Amazon region, and initiate a limited program in Asia’s Himalayan region. The goal of the program is to promote biodiversity conservation through infrastructure best practices.

Upgrading Brazil's Official Conservation Investment Model

Managing national parks and reserves requires reliable information about needed investments in equipment, infrastructure and research. CSF recently revamped the model, called the Minimum Conservation Investment model (IMC), used by Brazilian public land managers to calculate these needs. The project was a partnership between CSF-Brasil, the Brazilian Ministry of Environment and GiZ, the German overseas cooperation agency.

In this process, CSF adapted and integrated financial models we had previously developed for protected areas. We reviewed and corrected unit cost figures used by the IMC and built in the capacity to forecast investments over a ten-year period. Finally, we added a feature to permit forecasting investment needed to create new protected areas.

Costos y beneficios del proyecto hidroeléctrico del río Inambari

En junio de 2010, los gobiernos de Perú y Brasil firmaron un Acuerdo Energético que prevé que compañías brasileñas construyan en ríos de la Amazonía peruana centrales hidroeléctricas para exportar energía al Brasil. El proyecto hidroeléctrico del río Inambari, con una potencia instalada de 2,200 megavatios, es el primero de cinco posibles proyectos en contar con un Estudio de Factibilidad (EF) realizado por la compañía promotora EGASUR.
