Propuestas ganadoras buscan proponer soluciones innovadoras para la conservación de la biodiversidad en la Amazonía Andina

La Iniciativa para la Conservación en la Amazonía Andina (ICAA) felicita a los ganadores de las becas de las propuestas para Investigaciones Económicas Aplicadas para la Conservación en la Amazonia Andina, quienes recibirán hasta US$15.000 para desarrollar sus propuestas. Además, contarán con asistencia técnica y capacitación en teoría económica y análisis económico ambiental durante el tiempo que dure la investigación, a fin de mejorar sus capacidades para realizar estudios de investigación económica aplicada...

Economic Tools for Conservation and Infrastructure Planning in the Albertine Rift

From June 11-22, 2012, twenty-eight environmental professionals from eight African nations gathered at the Rwenzori International Hotel in Kasese, Uganda to learn how economic approaches can help them address environmental impacts of infrastructure development in the Albertine Rift.

CSF People: Sarah Naigaga

Born in Uganda, Sarah Naigaga first came to CSF as a student at our Economic Tools for Conservation course in 2004 with the hopes of sharpening her analytic skills. At the time, she had been working with Greenwatch, an environmental law organization, and was involved in reviewing the Bujagali hydro dam. She was also selected as a representatives of civic society organizations to review the strategic sectoral, social, and environmental assessment of power development options in the Nile Equatorial Lakes Region. This process exposed her to broader issues of development and allowed her the opportunity for collaboration with a multitude of actors across several countries.

Ecosystem Spotlight: Micronesia

Micronesia is a sub-region of Oceania, east of the Philippines and northeast of Indonesia. It is comprised of thousands of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Kiribati, the Mariana Islands, the Marshall Islands, Caroline Islands, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, and Wake Island are all considered part of Micronesia. In total, Micronesia is 1,230 square miles, or about twice the size of Los Angeles.

ASOARTESANAS recognized with Equator Prize by UNDP

ASOARTESANAS, a cooperative of women that collect and prepare plastic bags to be crocheted into eco-bags, were recognized at Rio+20 in June with the Equator Prize by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). ASOARTESANAS was one of the 25 selected out of 800 applicants to receive this $5,000 prize, as well as one of 10 who received an additional $20,000 special recognition award at the conference on sustainable development.

RESULTADO DA SELEÇÃO - Curso de Ferramentas Econômicas (Infraestrutura)

Divulgamos aqui o resultado do processo seletivo para o Curso de Ferramentas Econômicas para a Conservação - Infraestrutura na Amazônia, apoiado pela Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation e USAID.
Foi um processo concorrido devido à quantidade e qualidade dos inscritos. Dessa forma, o critério de seleção levou em conta - além do perfil do candidato - a distribuição geográfica, perfil e segmento das instituições, envolvimento com o tema e gênero.

Temos duas listas de selecionados: uma lista principal e uma lista de espera, em ordem de prioridade. Os candidatos selecionados na lista principal deverão confirmar sua participação até o dia 30 de julho. Caso haja desistências, elas serão preenchidas de acordo com a ordem de prioridade da lista de espera.

Big victory for CSF Alum

This week Mexican President Felipe Calderón withdrew the permit for a 9,400 acre development of a mega resort adjacent Cabo Pulmo National Marine reserve on the southern tip of Baja California. Its proximity to a 20,000-year-old reef and hundreds of species turned this project into a global concern. 2011 CSF Economic Tools for Conservation Graduate Paulina Godoy Aguilar of Amigos para la Conservación de Cabo Pulmo AC, had a big hand in this victory. Because of her efforts and those of many other conservationists and activists alike, hundreds of species and thousands of coastal acres have been saved.

Khan Academy Economics: A Resource for CSF Graduates

Khan Academy is an extraordinary phenomenon in education. In just a few years, the organization has posted thousands of short videos with instruction on an ever-widening array of topics. Including economics. We like their economics videos so much they are now all available on CSF's website as well as the Khan site.

CSF course graduates frequently ask us to refresh their memory on a particular topic - "What exactly is consumer surplus?" - and Mr. Khan now is available to explain. The videos average around 10 minutes and use very helpful graphics to explain the concepts.

Born in La Paz, Bolivia, Alfonso Malky Harb first came to CSF as a student in 2006, where he participated in the Madidi National Park course on economic tools for conservation. Two years later, Alfonso joined CSF as an Economic Analyst in the Bolivian office. With a Master's degree in Agricultural Economics from Catholic University of Chile, an undergraduate degree in Economics from the Bolivian Catholic University, and a diploma in Environmental and Social Research Methods from PIEB (Programa de Investigación Estratégica en Bolivia), he was a natural fit for CSF.
