Who We Are: From defending the biodiversity and local communities of the Amazon rainforest to supporting sustainable fisheries in Indonesia, CSF uses economics to protect nature and people. For the last 25 years, CSF has been empowering people with strategic tools to solve environmental challenges and fuel sustainable development, building strategies that have been applied all over the world. Through our country offices, we provide strategic advice to our partners and stakeholders through economic analysis and training. CSF has dedicated teams in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Peru, South Africa, Costa Rica, and the United States. Our capacity building program has reached more than 5,000 people working for more than 3,000 organizations in 131 countries.

Who the Senior Environmental Economist Will Be: CSF is seeking an experienced, bilingual (Spanish and English) environmental economist to support analytical work across the organization, helping to ensure consistent technical excellence and high-quality publications. The Senior Environmental Economist will work directly with the Lead Economist, and will lead research design, conduct data analysis, supervise research teams, support staff and contracted analysts with technical work, contribute to proposal development, teach in our courses, and support communications of our work. A successful candidate will be self-motivated and work with colleagues around the world. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the mission of a dynamic international environmental NGO addressing our most pressing environmental challenges with innovative solutions.

How You Will Make a Difference:  By joining our international and diverse team, you will be responsible for ensuring that our global impact - from protecting whale sharks in Indonesia to empowering Indigenous communities in the Amazon - will be underpinned by consistent technical quality. The CSF team is a community of mission-driven, motivated experts from multiple sectors (economics, ecology, engineering, education) all collaborating across the world to advance conservation efforts in our most threatened ecosystems. By becoming part of our dynamic team, you will contribute your expertise to an international community of people working to make the world a better place, and you will be able to see the impact of your work play out in CSF’s strategic efforts to value, finance, and fight for nature.

What You Will Do:

  • Research: Contribute to research design, as well as conducting high quality environmental economics research on a wide variety of topics in different parts of the world.
  • Manage and lead analytical projects: Lead 1-3 important studies per year, including research design, analysis, writing, and presentation of results to policy audiences and funders.
  • Support analytical projects: Support multiple research projects managed by others in a range of capacities as needed. Can include backstopping or carrying out selection of analytical approach, analysis, writing, and other tasks.
  • Technical team: Work directly with the Lead Economist to form a technical support unity that boosts the quality of research and capability to effectively carry out and communicate about diverse analyses institution wide.
  • Communication: Ensure rigorous and compelling written presentation of research carried out across the institution, including in peer-reviewed journals and CSF white papers. Represent the organization and present results in a variety of meetings and events, including to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Publications: Lead submission of 1 or more articles per year for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Teaching: Participate as a dynamic and engaging instructor in our training programs.
  • Proposal Development: Seek new opportunities, help develop proposals and grant applications, and communicate with funders as requested.
  • Learning: As needed, independently learn about new analytical themes and approaches, and apply them to CSF research projects. Identify needs and opportunities in this regard.

What You Will Bring:

  • Advanced degree in environmental economics or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience applying economics to environment and development issues, including working directly with policy makers, the private sector, academia, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to fluently speak and write in English and Spanish. Portuguese proficiency is a plus.
  • Broad international and intercultural work experience, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a positive attitude.
  • Technical proficiency in two or more of the following analytical areas: natural capital valuation, cost-benefit analysis, design and implementation of financial mechanisms for nature protection/restoration, spatial modeling and economic impact analysis, among others.
  • Successful track record of writing technical proposals.
  • Engaging and effective public speaker to academic and non-academic audiences.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and taking on new analytical problems.
  • Skills and experience navigating relationships and negotiations with partners and clients to define and target research to drive policy and behavior change.
