Strategies to Reduce GHG Emissions and Strengthen Protected Area Financing

In 2022, CSF conducted a national analysis of the economic impacts of Bolivia’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), providing a key tool for the national government. Continuing this collaboration, CSF has led strategic initiatives to address deforestation and financial gaps in protected areas, including:

  • A national deforestation and mitigation strategy aligned with Bolivia’s 2021-2030 NDCs, estimating financing needs and engaging stakeholders.
  • Economic Impact Assessment of mitigation measures under Santa Cruz’s Climate Change Strategy, delivering cost estimates, econometric databases, and governance policy recommendations.
  • Sustainable Financing for Protected Areas, analyzing two income mechanisms to support Bolivia’s National Protected Areas System (SNAP), including the Conservation Passport and entrance fee optimization.

Key project outputs include scientific studies, economic analyses, and stakeholder engagement to inform policy and decision-making. Looking ahead, a new project phase launching in February 2025 focuses on:

  1. Optimizing protected area revenue through SISCO entrance fee adjustments and implementing the Conservation Passport.
  2. Supporting Bolivia’s climate agenda in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Water.
  3. Communicating environmental achievements, sharing success stories under the “Team Europe” initiative.

Funded by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida and implemented with the European Union, this initiative strengthens conservation, sustainable management, and environmental governance in Bolivia.
