PlanaFlor is a national plan for sustainable development that promotes environmental, economic, and social assets to pursue the effective implementation of the Brazilian Forest Code, Law no. 12.651/12, which provides protection for the native vegetation.
 

CSF Brazil and several partner organizations have published 20 studies to support sustainable land use in Brazil. The twenty studies are a part of the PlanaFlor initiative and can be accessed at this link here. These studies help diagnose some of the challenges and opportunities of implementing Brazil's Forest Code. This collaboration between CSF, the Brazilian Foundation for Sustainable Development (BVRio) and the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) was made possible with funding and support from The Norwegian International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI).

PlanaFlor began in 2021 to address the protection and recovery of Brazilian forests by increasing the sustainability of agricultural and livestock production; the main source of income and prosperity in rural regions of the country. This initiative is the first step in a strategic plan for sustainable development based on the agro-environmental assets of the country. 
The studies hope to describe key scenarios of a 'Green New Deal' that promotes the protection of native vegetation, the recovery of degraded areas and the sustainable development of farming and forestry, while ensuring climate, food and land security.

In this initial diagnosis stage of the PlanaFlor initiative, CSF and partners are beginning to identify synergies and potential collaborations between public policies and existing public and private programs and projects. In March 2023, PlanaFlor’s plan was finalized with a matrix of strategic objectives and actions needed to execute the most effective implementation of the Forest Code between the years of 2023 and 2030. 

“The implementation of the Brazilian Forest Code can make use of several incentive mechanisms, such as the rapidly growing carbon market. Besides that, it will also create the conditions for the implementation, monitoring, validation and evaluation of a series of new economic incentives and programs”, says Pedro Gasparinetti, CSF Brazil Director.

The goal for the remainder of the year is to engage several government agencies and stakeholders from the civil society and the private sector in this strategic plan to optimize efforts, expand collaboration and multiply the impact of the proposed actions to protect and restore Brazil’s valuable natural resources without sacrificing economic growth.
